Tab-to-list extension

Markwise vs OneTab

A free list of closed tabs vs. a library that remembers what was in them.

Updated

OneTab is the classic tab fix: click the icon and every open tab collapses into a list on one page. It is free, needs no account, and saves memory. Restore one tab or all of them later. The list holds titles and URLs, nothing else.

Markwise's Focus Sessions do the same first step from the Chrome extension, then keep going: the set gets a title and a summary, tabs are grouped, and the pages that matter are saved as bookmarks with their text so search and Copilot can find them months later.

Choose Markwise if

People who close tabs to come back to the work, and want to find one page from that session by what it said, not by scrolling a list.

Choose OneTab if

People who want the fastest free way to free memory and park tabs, with no account and no AI.

Pricing

Markwise

Free tier available; Pro is $4.90/month or $3.25/month billed annually, with a 3-day trial for $0.99.

OneTab

Free browser extension. No signup needed. Lists are kept in the browser; sharing a list uploads it to a web page.

OneTab is free and does one job well. Markwise is worth paying for only if finding and asking the saved pages is the job.

Where a OneTab list goes to die

A OneTab list grows by one block every time you hit the button. After a few months it is hundreds of titles on one page, sorted by when you panicked. You can Ctrl+F a title. You cannot search what the pages said, and you rarely remember the title.

That is not a OneTab bug. It is a list, and lists do not remember content. The tabs are closed, but the decision you were avoiding is still there.

What a Focus Session keeps

Save the window from the Markwise extension. The session gets a generated title and summary, tabs are grouped by topic, and low-signal tabs (search results, logins) can be hidden. You can open all tabs again or just one group.

The important pages, up to ten per session, are saved as normal bookmarks: text extracted, tagged, indexed. That is the part that pays off later. Search "the pricing page with the usage tiers" and the page turns up even if you forgot which session it came from. On Pro, ask Copilot and it cites those pages.

Privacy and weight

OneTab keeps your tab list in the browser and says URLs are not sent to its developers unless you share a list. Markwise is a hosted library, so saved pages live in your account; that is what makes search across devices possible.

If you never need to search what was in the tabs, OneTab is lighter and private by default. Use it.

Why people choose Markwise

  • Find a page from a closed session by what it said
  • Sessions get a title, summary and topic groups
  • Key pages become searchable bookmarks with their text
  • Ask Copilot across sessions and bookmarks (Pro)
  • Same library on the web and iPhone

Where OneTab wins

  • Free, no account
  • Lists stay in your browser
  • Firefox and Safari support
  • Nothing to learn

Frequently asked questions

Can I search inside OneTab?+

Only the titles and URLs on the OneTab page, with the browser's find (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F). It does not store page text. Markwise stores text for saved bookmarks, so search finds a page by its content.

Can I move my OneTab list into Markwise?+

Yes. OneTab exports a plain list of URLs and titles. Turn it into a bookmarks file (or open the tabs and save the window as a Focus Session), then import with Markwise bulk import (Pro).

Does a Focus Session count against the free plan?+

The session itself is a saved tab set. The important pages it keeps as bookmarks count toward the 50-bookmark free plan like any other bookmark. Pro removes the cap.

The bottom line

Pick OneTab if you want a free, private, one-click way to close tabs and you will restore them by scrolling a list.

Pick Markwise if you close tabs to come back to the work, and you want to find a page from that session by what it said, or ask about it, months later.
