Read-later (shut down)

Pocket alternatives (2026)

Mozilla shut Pocket down on 8 July 2025. If you still have the ZIP, the CSV inside is the inheritance. Markwise is a library you can ask, not a reading queue: import the CSV, then search by meaning on Pro.

There is no official Pocket successor. Instapaper, Readwise Reader, and Matter still win if you want to finish or listen to articles. Ranked by job below.

Ranked by job

  1. 1. A library you can ask, not only a reading queue

    Markwisethis site

Imports Pocket CSV. Auto-tags. Pro searches by meaning. Not an offline reader or TTS app.

  2. 2. The closest classic read-later

    Instapaper

Clean reading, speed control, still alive. Keyword search, not a Copilot.

  3. 3. Power reading, RSS, PDFs, spaced-repetition highlights

    Readwise Reader

Best-in-class inbox for people who actually finish pieces. $9.99/month billed annually. Overkill if you only needed Pocket's save button.

  4. 4. Listening to articles

    Matter

Class-leading text-to-speech. Newsletter/RSS inbox. Different job from retrieval.

  5. 5. Visual collections with a generous free tier

    Raindrop.io

Nested collections, public sharing, a polished grid. Keyword search, so finding an old save depends on your tags.

  6. 6. Open source and self-hosted

    Linkwarden

AGPLv3, free to self-host, cloud from $3/user/month billed yearly. Keeps a copy of each page. More setup than a hosted app.
